Downing Renewable Developments submits planning application for 49.9MW battery energy storage system in Argyll and Bute

Downing Renewable Developments (DRD) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the region's renewable energy infrastructure by submitting a planning application to Argyll and Bute Council for a 49.9MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Taigh an Uillt Energy Storage Park. This development aims to support the transition to a more sustainable energy grid by storing surplus electricity and releasing it during periods of high demand reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting the UK's net-zero emissions targets.

The site was selected following a comprehensive site selection process that evaluated planning considerations such as environmental impact, land use, topography and proximity to infrastructure. The decision was further supported by the site's close proximity to Taynuilt Substation.

DRD engaged with local stakeholders throughout the development process to ensure that community concerns were addressed including two public consultation events with the community as well as engagement with local stakeholders.

Head of Downing Renewable Developments, Tony Gannon said: “The submission of this planning application represents a significant milestone for DRD and the Argyll and Bute region. If approved, the 49.9MW Battery Energy Storage System will not only enhance the local energy infrastructure but also contribute to the broader goal of achieving a sustainable and resilient energy future”.
